Start by tell the phone rep that you will record the conversation if they start with the abusive phone tactics. This is something I learned working for a collection agency. They do not want to be recorded. Always pay what you can, even if it's five dollars.

Hello, welcome :) Always check your state laws about recording conversations. My state is a one party recording laws so sometimes I record it and not tell them. Is it tricking them? Perhaps but they should follow the law (I am following the law, one party means that one party has to know it's being recorded. I am one party, so the other does not have to know.)
Also, I am not always sure about paying even $5.00. First have the debt validated and get everything in writing first. If you pay first, it is admitting to the debt and will reset your SOL.
