If it doesn't work when I try it, can I still try one of the credit repair agencys? Or can they not dispute claims that I already tried to dispute before? I'm fuzzy on this subject even after reading a bunch of posts on this site.

Yes, you can first give a try yourself and then go for credit repair agencies to improve your credit. If you go through the FTC website, you will find that even FTC recommends to repair your own debt because you can do whatever the credit repair agencies will do to repair your credit.

I agree with both of you. Most of the credit repair agencies are spams and they do not offer the service they promise, because no one can remove accurate information from your report. Again under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, you need not pay a credit repair agency unless they have provided you with the service they promised. Moreover, if you repair your credit yourself, you save the money that you have paid to the repair agency and use this money to pay back the debt.
