I wasn't sure if anyone can help me with this but I thought it was worth a shot.

I have a client and her credit file has listed her as being deceased. She is alive and well and I've gone through all the procedures of making sure this isn't a case of identity theft. So indeed she is alive.

My questions are...

How does someone correct this?
What is the time frame for correcting this?
Anyone else ever had this happen?

This has happened one other time in the 10 years I've been in the finance industry and I can't remember how the person got it corrected.

Hi Sassy
As per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, both the credit bureaus and the information provider must correct inaccurate information in your credit report and so you should first dispute it and get it corrected with the credit bureaus. The bureaus need to investigate it within 30 days and after the investigation is complete the bureaus need to provide you with a free copy of your credit report notifying you of the changes that have been made.

It is not a case of identity theft because there was no new line of credit in your name of which you are not aware of. However, since the bureaus are required to change any wrong information in your credit file as per provisions of the FCRA, you should immediately dispute it.
As far as I know, SC is correct and there is no easy way out to get your credit report corrected.
