It might not be an immediate help but I assume that they gather complaints and when there is enough to make a case they go investigate the company and take them to court if necessary.

pretty much how FYI described.except the AG'S will work with fewer complaints, and might act right away if the place in question is in their state.example:first shore credit called about 1 1/2 yrs ago.they are in IL.i am in IL.ms.madigan took care of this pretty quick.the FTC there has to be alot of complaints.it took about three years to get heathmill the overseas pdl parent co.

I would contact your state's AG office by phone and ask to speak with someone regarding your complaint. In a case like yours, I wouldnt let them wait until they get more complaints, I would request that they step in now, because a major violation has taken place. I would also file a complaint with the FTC as soon as possible, they should be quite interested in this matter.
in response i have just reported this with both my ag and ftc..s

How is it showing up on your credit report? Even if you paid it, it is not going to disappear until 7 years (if paid - or more, depending on your state, if not) after the judgment was issued. So it is important to know how it is notated.

So you paid the judgment? Do you have the satisfaction (stating it is paid and closed) letter? If so, send a copy of that with your dispute to the CRAs. If not, contact the court. You may have to come up with copies of receipts showing that you paid. Get that letter, you need it.

Actually it says what they do right there on the complaint website. "Your complaints can help us detect patterns of wrong-doing, and lead to investigations and prosecutions. The FTC enters all complaints it receives into Consumer Sentinel, a secure online database that is used by thousands of civil and criminal law enforcement authorities worldwide. The FTC does not resolve individual consumer complaints."
If enough of a pattern appears, the FTC may step in and request the Dept. of Justice to allow them to sue, but generally the FDCPA is designed to be utilized by Consumers - i.e. SUE THEM!
