It sounds as if you want to find out if a car you are purchasing is owned free & clear by the current owner, and not financed or subject to repossession? Is that correct?
If that's your question, I think you may be able to request a title search be done on the vehicle to be sure there are no liens against the title. However, I'm not entirely sure how you go about doing that. Possibly you'd need to go to your state's licensing/titling bureau (like the DMV?) and have it done.
