My question is whether this debt can be resolved without going to court. I cannot not afford an attorney as I am 76 years old and have a limited amount of income. I originally paid this debt through another bill collector however, I cannot at this time prove it. What else can I do?

Have you considered debt consolidation or bankrupcy? I am going to go on an limb and assume you are on SSI and possibly retirement. In no way can they touch your SSI payments but they can, if they take you to court, touch your assets.

Which is why I asked, have you considered debt consolidation, debt management or bankrupcy?

How did you pay it? Never pay something twice, fight it. If they are coming after you for an already paid debt, then they are a low-life bottom-feeder and you may have no choice but to let it go to court.

It doesn't matter if you can't afford an attorney, this is the United States. There is legal aid, consumer advocacy groups, AARP, etc. etc. Ask your local court and they will refer you, or go to "www.naca.net" the National Association of Consumer Advocates and they can refer you to a low cost, or possibly free, attorney. Attempting to collect on a paid debt is a big no-no.
