By sending you verification, they are validating the debt. The question is, whether or not what they sent actually verifies that it is yours, if not, then it is not valid; i.e. invalidated.

the jdb sent oc name, amount due, account #, there account #, and used the word verification in their letter when i sent debt validation letter. mind you this was a letter on jdb letterhead and not anything to do with oc. so what can i do with an unvalidated debt?

From what I have been told, a CA must provide something from the OC in order for a debt to be validated. Like copies of statements, the original contract, something of that nature.
A CA sending something they typed up on their letterhead with your name, the name of the creditor, amount they claim you owe, etc. is just verification.
I mean think about it, I could sit around all day long typing up letters and sending them to people telling them they owe me money. It would take some sort of paperwork from the OC with the debtors information on it for my claims to hold up in court.
Now this is straight from my attorney's mouth, but we're in Florida, so it may be different by state.

I've had so many arguments with people about this that I've given up. I agree with that but so many others, on this board and elsewhere, insist all they have to do is say "it's yours" and there you go.... Perhaps I am just talking about the way things *should* be if actual *Justice* reigned and not the way things are. Especially with disputes filed with the CRA - the law clearly says that they must engage in a reasonable investigation but again, others insist a note on a letterhead is good enough.
It's not for me, though.... And it shouldn't be for anyone else, either....
