I have several cards like this. I have used them and paid the bills on them ontime for several years, and was really just wanting to know how they would validate.
However, due to the economy and losing over half of my income, I have not been able to pay anything for 8 months. All of my accounts have been charged off. I had to turn my car in to the finance company, and now they are asking for $12000 for the deficiency. If I had that, I would have been able to keep the car. Things are not getting any better here, (unemployment is over 12% in my county). I have cut back everywhere that I can, and my income now is just paying our basic living expenses. I have consulted a bankruptcy attorney, and have retained him. I am not totally giving up yet, but I do not have any other realistic options right now. At least I can get some relief by giving the CA's his number. You can tell how much they do not like it when I repeat to them "call my attorney". I even had one begging my forgiveness when they called me after I gave them the attorney's number. She kept apologizing and promised that they would never call again. It is worth it to me to pay the small amount to him every month just to get some breathing room from the CA's until something breaks.

Filing bankruptcy is not "giving up". It is availing yourself of a right that you have as a citizen of the United States to discharge debt that you can no longer afford due to changing circumstances beyond your control.

Chrys,
I do not see BK as "giving up" per se. I am still holding out hope that I will be able to pay my debts. It will be over two years before I get the lawyer paid off and can initiate the proceedings. I appreciate your sentiment on the situation. A lot of people seem to think that filing bankruptcy is cheating or stealing. If only they lost half of their income and still had to try to support a family. Oh well, life goes on, and it will all work out in the end.
