I have just discovered that credit cards have been opened in my name. I have reported these as fraud accounts to the credit bureaus and now the creditors. However, just a few days after I reported an account as fraud to a creditor, the credit card company sent me a billing statement. Can they do this?

If it's just a few days after you reporting it fraud, I wouldn't worry. Just means the bill was already generated by the time you reported it.

Make sure you have WRITTEN PROOF that you reported the card as fraud to the credit card company. Make sure they closed the account. Be sure that you spoke to someone in the security or fraud department of each company. Follow up in writing, and include copies (NOT originals) of supporting documents. It's important to notify credit card companies and banks in writing. Send your letters by certified mail, return receipt requested, so you can document what the company received and when. Keep a file of your correspondence and enclosures.

Make sure the company sends you a dispute form. Fill it out and send it back promptly.

Be sure to place a fraud alert of all three credit report agencies. File a police report. And file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission
