Northland group inc. has offered any settlement payment?
Date: Mon, 06/01/2009 - 06:29
I get a letter from Northland Group Inc last week offering me a settlement payment , and making it in 3 payments. It shows current bal. , settlement offer, the last 4 numbers of mt SS#, the credit card company name, Client ( Midland Credit Management, original account #,( this I'm not sure about for I cut the card up) , it was stating I can make the 3 payments by the 9th of each month and when completed they will consider this account satisfied and closed and a reease letter will be sent. Doesn't state where the release letter will be sent too, but one will be sent.
Me like a dummy thought well this looks real, has 3 coupons at the bottom to mail in each payment with. I do want to do the right thing even though my credit is already ruined, I made my first payment last week. Then I seen on tv about credit card settlement scams so started a research this morning on the company with the BBB and no results would show for them.
in the letter there is a email address for this compant northland and a website if I wish to pay by internet.
I can't remember how long it has been since I sent them a payment , but it has been years, and i read that this company has been sending these out after the compnay has already written off the account.
I don't know how to check to see if this company has written off this account, and rather to send another payment or not.
Can you please advise me on what to do on this matter and have I already made a mistake by sending the first payment. I mailed in a money order with the information on it as to what it was for and have the stubs from it as proff. Also I do have a judgement against me from another credit card and file my on paper work with each new attempt to go against me.
Where can I go to see how long for NC that they can wait before entering a judgement against me and can they freeze a checking account in the matter in the state of NC.
I'm at such a loss here, help

Hi
If the original creditor has written off the debt it does not mean that you no longer owe the debt. Mostly the OC sells off the debt to a CA, after charging it off and the creditor can sue you for the debt till the SOL expiry.
However, before you start paying off the debt, you should get the debt validated from the CA. Only if they validate the debt, you should pay them off, otherwise not. I think that you should send them a DV letter before making the second payment.

If your debt has been charged off / written off by the creditor, it will get reflected in your credit report.

Northland Group is local to me and I know a few collectors working there. As far as I know, they do mostly 3rd party collections with a smattering of purchased account.

I have to say that I did have a pretty good experience with northland  I had a credit card that went to collections and I refused to even talk with that collection agency that had it first. Then it went to northland and they gave me a couple different settlement offers, but I didn't have the money at the time to settle. So I was making my monthly payment to them with the arrangements we had made. Then I got the same offer to settle using the 3 payments. I accepted the offer because it ended up being less than I did owe. They sent me my PIF letter within a month of me making my last payment. I checked my CR and it is reported as paid as agreed. And then I disputed the accounts with the old collection agency and the OC through the CRA and they changed them to paid collections. This all happened around this time last year.
Northland Group Inc Letter
I have checked and this account was charged off and in my credit report it only shows Northland Group, but in my letter it reads the CC company, then Midland, then Northland Group.
I did call Northland, they comfirmed the payment but for some reason Midland has taken the account back and the payment has been forwarded to them. I call Midland, got a very nasty person, no information at all and suppose to call them back in the morning. Also Northland told me Midland would honor the payment method since they were acting on thier behalf. Have the name of person I talked to and her direct number to call her back at. So now what do I do?
I'm very confused here and my next payment is due the 9th of next month. I mailed the first one priorty mail with del confirmation as well.
Thanks

If you make the payments, be sure to read the fine print - I had gotten an offer for them regarding a Citi account, with the three coupons, and in an inconspicuous place it said they would send more coupons after these three were used. After about six months of not taking their offers, Citi, the original creditor, negotiated a 30% deal with my settlement company.
Don't write to anyone who writes to you and don't speak to them
Don't write to anyone who writes to you and don't speak to them on the phone. Wait until they go to court. At that point most courts have a system where the lawyer will negotiate with you and you get a much fairer deal. You can even negotiate a percentage off the original debt. However you must go to court and be sure they have filed it in the correct court; because a judgment against you can mean they can collect against it even in the future. I had one filed against me in the wrong court but the right state. I filed a absence of jurisdiction motion and the court transferred the case to my county, which was inconvenient for the collector as the amount was $800. They did not appear in court and the case was dismissed. Generally for smaller debts they will not go to court unless they are like capital one which does, and after the SOL period you can have them taken off by complying with the 3 credit reporting agencies' guidelines. This may mean that in the interim your credit will be in a mess, so you have to make a choice as to what you want to do and count the costs.

Follow this advice and you will end up with a judgement on your credit report. It is always better to deal with this as early as possible. Once it goes to court, you are responsible for all legal fees even if you do settle.

Well, I'm currently dealing with Northland Group and recently made the 2nd payment out of 3. I got one more payment to go and I was told a letter will be mail to me within 30 days. I owe almost $2000 and the settlement was less than 1/3 of what I owe, so I accepted the offer.

I remember getting a few letters from them a few years ago, they never did squat after I ignored them. Deal with them if you will but be careful, I have heard that many will take your money and then sell off your debt to someone else even though you paid it. I would wait until they sue, that way a judgement can be levied by a court and some of the nonsense that can be encountered with these junk debt agencies (paying them and not being credited, etc) at least then the terms are confirmed by a thrid party. Plus there is no guerantee they will do anything.
