I appreciate any help you can give me here. I recently took a look at my credit report and to my surprise there was a debt collection on it that I had never heard of before. Its dated 11/07 and I managed to track it down to it being dental related. So found out it was from dental work that I had gotten many years ago. I think it was in 2003. Im wondering why I was never contacted about it if it was put on my credit report. I contacted a debt agency to try to get it paid off and it ended up going through Allegro Law. When I looked them up I found all of the threads on here about them and am reluctant on staying with them now. Someone also told me about SoL and it may be out of the SoL but Im not really sure how that works. I live in NJ. Basically Im asking what to do about it. Ive never been contacted to pay the debt but it is on my credit report and apparently has been for a year and a half.

What you need to do is find out what address they sent the Collection notice to? See if they had the correct address, because they need to send it to your correct address. By Law you have 30 days to respond and pay or dispute the debt. I would call them on this as being an Ex Debt Collecter, i have seen this many times, the Collection Agency or Law Office will likely remove it from your credit report if you pay it.

If it was 2003 it may be past SOL (which is 6 years from the time of last payment in New Jersey). See: Statute of Limitations on Credit Card Debt in NJ.

When was the last time you paid on it?

Allegro Law is being sued by the Attorney General of the state of New York for deceptive business practices. And here is the results of this investigation: companies fined $245,000 and a website has been put up by Cuomo and the Consumer Frauds Bureau warning people about debt settlement companies.

Yea I read about that stuff with Allegro Law which is why I decided against it. To be honest I have no idea when the last time I paid on it was I actually did not even know I had this bill. And is it 6 years this is where Im confused becaue it isnt a credit card bill its just from the dentist. On the credit report it shows up from Trojan Professional SE which seems to be a debt collector. It took several tries to get in contact with them to find out what this even was for and then they told me to just pay the dentist. When I contacted the dentist they said to just send them a check and didn't offer me any paperwork or anything like that.
