sued by apothaker

I received a notice that I'm being sued by Apothaker. There is no court date. The strange thing about it is that they sent be two of them. One with an Order for Alternative Service of Process attached and one without. The notice was stamped as received October 3rd, 2008, but i didn't get it until April 28th, 2009. It said I have 20 days to defend. I'm totally confused. I sent a validation letter to them requesting proof that I owe 8, 724.54. along with proof that Discover card assigned this debt to them to collect. They only sent me a letter stating that NOW 9,048.11 is the amount demanded and is the amount the client CLAIMS is due. No other information was given. Where should I go from here?
