looking to pay off my CC accounts
Date: Tue, 06/09/2009 - 11:29
I've got about $30k worth of credit card debt. Credit score is a little below 700. Not past due on anything. Have one recent negative report on my credit report from a cable company dispute.
My average APR is probably around 15%. it might actually be lower then that, but just temporarily due to a balance transfer (lower apr on the transfer for x months etc).
I've never looked into anything beyond balance transfers before. I'd like to know what my options are.
Doing some quick googling, it sounds like some of the companies offering to help basically make you stop paying your payments until your way past due and the credit card companies are willing to negotiate. Is this basically the only way to get the credit companies to work with you? Do i have to be in serious trouble before i have any options?
I filled out the contact form on the home page here so i'll see what that gets me. But if anyone has any other advice, i'm all ears.
thanks

Contact them now. They will work with you before you default(I am current). I was able to get 0% from Citi and Chase is going to offer a much lower rate - they are calling us back tomorrow. We explained that we would be delinquent if our balances and APR stayed the same. They thanked us for calling them up ahead of time before it got to that point. CC are hurting right now - it cannot hurt to try before you start missing payments.
Best of luck!

So none of these debt consolidation/debt management etc companies will really be able to do anything for me unless i'm past due?
I've called the credit card companies once or twice before and usually they either say they cant lower the apr, or they lower it by 1 or 2 percent which doesn't help much going from 19 to 17.
but i guess it cant hurt to try again.
What CC companies? You need to get in the backdoor, so to speak
What CC companies? You need to get in the backdoor, so to speak? You will not be able to negotiate this through their main line numbers...
let me know what your CC are and I will post their hardship phone numbers here(if I have them).
Maybe if you're persistent
I called the CC companies and didn't qualify for their programs as I hadn't lost my job. I couldn't lose my job as I am self employed. They didn't care about that. I lost a lot of income nonetheless and stopped paying them and went into a DS program. Now they are starting to make offers.
