Portfolio Recovery Associates is suing me. I tried to settle but they pulled the offer off the table when I insisted on something in writing before the money was taken out of my account. I guess I need a lawyer now. Anyone know of one, possibly familiar with these guys, in the Los Angeles area (Torrance courthouse)?

how were you served?did you check to see if the summons is real?if so,answer the summons through the court clerk.they should be able to help you on how to answer.do not go through the lawyers.go through your court clerk.

It's better to have one but you technically don't need one, you can appear pro se. However, these lawyers are slick and you really want one to represent you. Contact the National Association of Consumer Advocates for a referral or call your county court and inquire about Legal Aid if you cannot afford an attorney.

If you choose to represent yourself, this site:
has a very detailed description of the court process. It's very thorough, but keep in mind that it is for New York and your State or County court may have some different procedures. For your local court procedures, look up your county Municipal court website.
