What is the best way to ask a collection company to prove the collection to you,as far as the date the collection started and what it was for?

If it is not the original creditor and the debt has been sold ask for debt validation...this would include original signed credit application as well as history of the account. If they cannot provide that they are SOL.
They will try to attempt suit in the hopes you wont answer the complaint so that they can get a judgment by default so whatever you do ANSWER THE COMPLAINT...
In my experience they rarely have the information to back up the debt and paying a junk debt collector will not help your credit...if you show up it will be dismissed or withdrawn.
