Date open with Afni collections – What does it mean?

I have a question regarding [URL="http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/collection-agencies/afni.html"]AFNI Collections[/URL]. I pulled a copy of my credit report last week and there was a line on there from AFNI with an open date of 1/09. It is supposed to be for a T-mobile account. I have never had T-Mobile. I sent a debt validation to AFNI, but my question is this when you see a line on your credit report what does the date open mean? Is it when the account was opened or is it when the collection agency got the account?
