Wage Garnishment
Date: Mon, 06/22/2009 - 15:18
Hello, I was just given garnishment papers at work on Saturday night. This is the first time I have worked in a couple of months, and my job is part time. I only work one to two days out of the month, and my take-home pay is usually anywhere between $30 and $75.
I stay in my parents' home while I take care of my mother. Without that, I'd be up the creek as far as paying for rent and utilities. But I AM responsible for my own food, etc.
I live in Louisiana. I've been trying to research the laws, but the only suggestions I'm getting is to file for bankruptcy.
Bankruptcy? With my income?

Was it garnishment papers or a wage assignment. Garnishment has to be ordered by a court or some agency like the IRS. An assignment is just a contract between you and a creditor. Under federal law you can revoke an assignment. You need to send the creditor a letter revoking it and make sure your payroll office gets a copy in case they try to sneak it through anyway.
