I have never paid on it because it isn't mine! I have never even heard of it until just a couple of days ago. They say it is back from 1998!

You don't seem to understand. The collection letter has my name on it. They are apparently trying to scam me for $8,000.00. They claim that it is my debt and I know it is not!!! It is also past the statue of limitations in the state of Louisiana!!! Should I just ignore them or send them a Cease Communications letter? Should I alert this to my credit report?

Yeah I do understand. Your name may not be unique....there are over a 1000 people with my name in the US. They just skip traced you with the same name. Not a scam necessarily but a mistake.

OMG, are you kidding me?? Please someone else give me some advice other then Soaplady! She is not helping answer the questions I have! Regardless of how they got me on their radar they are not going to quit harrassing me. If they have the last 4 of my ss# they can do pretty much what they want!

Simple...dispute the debt as I said above. Not yours...make them prove it.

She's given you the correct advice. Skip tracing is not an exact science and many consumers are mis-identified. That's what the Debt Validation process is all about.

This is totally a scam. I just got the same letter and I know for fact it is not mine. I even went and pulled my credit report with all 3 agency and the credit report I can a few months ago. I would send a dispute letter and I would also send this to Capital One as well.
