Hello. I rec'd a summons today on a credit card debt that I do owe. I quit making payments on the account 15 months ago, when my mother became terminal. I am a only child, soley responsible for the care of my mother who is now confined to a hospital bed with Hospice helping us. She was not supposed to live through Christmas 2008. In the last 12 months, we have spent 5 months in the hospital. All of this can be confirmed through her multiple doctors, as can her diagnosis of a terminal end stage disease.

I have no family here, and the only income I have is the small amount she receives in her SSI. What can i do?

I appreciate any replies.

Firstly, you need to file an answer to the summon in order to avoid the default judgment. However, the creditor can easily bring a judgment against you to garnish your wages because you owe the debt and you are delinquent.
Now, since you do not have any income, your wage cannot be garnished. Moreover, SS benefit is also exempted from garnishment.
