new check was denied at target rx
Date: Thu, 07/16/2009 - 03:25
A number was printed on the back of my now void check to call for info. This was a number to target. They looked up the transaction and said that yes my account was free and clear, but it was linked to another account that was not in good standing. He then recited the number to my old account that has been closed almost a month and a number to call for more information. I called that number and got SCAN. She asked for my account information with i have to tell you, i was really scared to give out after the pdl nightmare. I decided since target gave me that number and I had called her it would be ok. She looked me up and could find no information on me. I asked her did we need to look it up under the old account and she said no, that the system could search me either way. She could find no information on me in the database. She said at that point I should contact Target and tell them this and ask them why they cannot take my check.
So heres what I am thinking...... the lady from SCAN probably didnt know exactly what she was doing or looked it up wrong. I think i will call back today and ask them to run it again.
Bet one of the lovely illegal pdl companies has reported me to a check clearing system? Great. And is this going to link my new account to my old allowing some of these freaks to debit my new account for this crap? Is there any way for them to find out my new account information if I dont give it to them? I am so ticked off.
Now that I have a new checking account that actually has a dime or two in it, I cannot write a check anywhere that is going to run it through a check verification system. And if that check verification system cannot tell me who it is, I cant even take appropriate actions against them. GRRRRRRRRRRR

Solution..always use your debit card. Dont write checks.

i am pretty sure that is not legal anyway, guest. i mean someone correct me if i am wrong but i think i remember reading here somewhere that that is not a legal clause.
shmlt, i would check out our banking and checks board here. this happened to me many times, i cannot write checks anywhere, which is fine because they really are not worth it, to be honest. if i call the number, they say that my account is clear but they still cannot accept it..

SCAN will only block you from writing checks or opening a new account. It will cross reference the account number and DL numbers, if there is a question of identity at this point, they will move deeper into the information. As for the making it possible to a PDL to debit the new account, nope! I use the system and would love to have this ability, but while the informaion is in the SCAN database, it is not available to the reporting companies.

thanks pdlowner. I was hoping they were a reputable company since target used them but at this point i just dont trust anyone. Going over to the banking boards to see what kind of info i can find on this. Does anyone have any more info as to what guest said about debiting a future account. I know that may not be a legal clause, but the illegal internet pdls really dont care too much about legalities do they? Since I stopped the account less than one month.

The only business that I have heard of actually being able to debit other accounts is a bank.
A little more basic info on SCAN. The are connected to over 77,000 retailers and 8 of 10 banks in the US. If you get added to the system for writing a bad check you will be removed from the system within a few days of full payment on the check. This differes from other check reporting systems that leave you one there for years.

Thanks pdlowner. Just got an intense call from ameriloan. He wants me to go get a prepaid visa from walmart with the promise to debit 50.00 on july 31. Said that will hold them off for sixty days where they will make arrangements from there. Does this sound fair? They are not liscensed here in MS and told me he did not receive my DV letter. (suprise suprise) Told me that they dont work with the management co I was using. told him i was not using one, I was trying to do this myself. He actually was not as bad as some, i just dont have a penny to send them and feel overwhelmed knowing I have to pay these debts. Just realized I am rambling. Got to go pay attention to work so hubby is not the only one out of a job huh?

Get an answering machine and screen your calls. Dont put yourself through anymore agony be talking to the illegal PDLs over the phone. If they are illegal then they will get very nasty, as they have really no other means to collect the debt.
They will harass, and even threaten you.
Send letters to the PDL companies revoking ach transactions. Send Cease and Distist Letters.
File a complaint with your states Attorney General.
Contact your states Regulator-Division of Fiance.
Check to see if the PDL company is licensed or for sure illegal.

when i said to avoid phone contact, i did not mean avoid all contact (unless the loan is illegal and over-paid, in which case they never should have reported anyway?), i just meant try to get written contact. this was advised when the poster mentioned a stressful phone call with ameriloan, which the poster said is not legal for them.

Ameriloan may not have been the company or the only company that reported them to SCAN. OP needs to list all past due PDL's to get a better determination and plan of attack to get their account removed from SCAN.

I hope the OP gets some more info and comes back and posts some more. This is really scary if a pdl did this-but surely an illegal loan could'nt?
Maybe I am missing something here but I would not accept the answer of "we cannot take your check and can't give you a reason why". I would continue to call back-sometimes you have to talk to more than one person or even a supervisor. I have never dealt with scan before but have had a few run-ins with telechek which I think is about the same thing. In fact just last month I had a check turned down and when I called them they said they had no negative info and would'nt give me a reason why. So...I waited a few minutes and called back again got someone different who gave me the same canned reply and I told him that was not an acceptable answer and I wanted somebody to give me the reason, then he finally tells me that something about the transaction raised a red flag and they needed me to call in and verify my identity after I did he said I would be able to write checks again in 24 hours and I was. I wonder if its something like this that happened?

I just found out whats going on and its NOT related to a pdl, not directly anyway. two weeks after i closed my bank account, i paid my cell phone bill. I paid online and did not think to change the account information they had on file. When I printed my recpt i noticed the old bank account number listed. Immediately called them to explain situation, got back online, updated account info, and paid from that account. Person I talked with said that would be fine....... well now they turned me over for a bad check with an agency here in MS who reports to scan. People, tell me one day these pdl's and my poor judgement will be a thing of the past. ARGHH!! So now i have to get on the phone with the cellular company to try to get this cleared up and just BTW to pdl owner, scan told me just what you said earlier that as soon as the debt was cleared by security check that it would take no more than 3 days to have my name removed from the database.
This guy from scan was not nearly as friendly as the lady last night but since he could actually tell me what was going on with my check its all gravy.

i did not think it was connected to a payday loan.
resqume1 - with me they will say i do not meet the requirements. it is because i bounced a check years ago to wal mart. it is all paid and should have been removed (my account is clear) but who knows.. the banking board really goes into detail with these things. i do not write checks at stores anyway so it is no big deal for me.

I'm glad you got it sorted out and thank you for coming back and updating your post. It just did'nt sit well with me for them to say "we won't accept your check and can't tell you why". LOL

The retailere just knows that the checking account/DL has been flagged and the customer must call an 800 # for more information. When they call the number, they are then directed to the merchant that reported them as having written a bad check. No need to blame the retailer.
i agree, it is standard these days for them to check.

I am not sure if the above was meant for me but I was'nt blaming the retailer. My understanding of the original post was that when Target declined the check the OP called scan and scan told her they were declining it but could'nt give her a reason as to why. So thats what I meant-that if SCAN is going to decline a check they need to give you a reason why, which it sounds like she did get when she called back the second time.

Not directed at anyone, just information. The same goes for SCAN. All that they know is that a reporting merchant has submitted a check/person to the system and to limit exposure will only provide the name and munber of the reporting merchant. We report the information and the status of the check, not the entire history to SCAN. My experience is that as soon as the initial call is made to SCAN, the reported customer knows exactly what the situation is...
