We have 47,000 in unsecured cc debt and after investigating Credit Relief Today (BBB accredited A rating) we signed yesterday. But, Debt Zero is the back end of the company that does all of the debt settlement part and I can't find much about them. The have NR on BBB which they address on their website but unfortunately I didn't discover this site until after I signed. I haven't paid them anything though, so I'm hoping for some feedback, and maybe even reassurance, before they start deducting money in two weeks.

Also, they take 10% as their commission and a $75 a month fee during the time we're in the program. (And the commission is taken up front before negotiations begin with CC companies). Any thoughts?

Do NOT work with any company that wants fees upfront. A retainer of $100 per creditor is fair. They should only receive their fees on the back end - i.e. a percentage of the SAVINGS. I have seen anywhere from 15 to 25%.

I don't know the extent of your situation or what payment plan they have you under but what you don't realize is that for the first 15-22 months, half of your payment will go towards their fee.

I posted this elsewhere regarding my situation of $90K in debt. Click on my name to see my posts and read my breakdown of different fee structures.

You can contact me direct for some companies you can talk to as I am not allowed to post links. I have done extensive research on this subject and have spoken with 6 different debt settlement companies. They all have different fee structures and you need to evaluate each and every one and determine which is right for you.

I would get out of your contract ASAP. There are better (and cheaper) ways to solve your debt problems.

I am pretty sure by law you have 3 business days to get out of any contract. They should have some 14 day refund policy or something as well. Since you have not paid them anything it should not be a problem.

Have you given them your bank account info yet? If so, I would call your bank and have them stop any withdrawals from this company.

They may have an A rating but the fact that they have passed your account to another "company" should also be a red flag.

You just need to call the person that you spoke with and cancel the contract. He/she will of course try and talk you out of it, and you will be making a mistake and all that good stuff. Then they will probably make you fax them a letter in hopes that you won't go to the trouble.

Most important, go to your bank and tell them you are not authorizing a fee to be drafted. They may or may not be able to prevent it, but bringing it to the banks attention before hand will go along way to convincing the bank to reverse the charge from your checking account if it goes through. It is a lot easier to get out of a contract before they have your money than it is to get your money back.

So as long as you prevent the draft then you are in control and can get out of it with out much of a problem. Heck, if need be pull all the money out of your account, just make sure the bank won't do something dumb, like cover it anyway and then charge you for overdraft.

I started the process with Debt Zero and then cancelled. I got a phone call from their rep today, wanting to know why. He went into hard sell mode, then got nasty when I wouldn't change my mind: "I guess you don't have what it takes."

If you go to their website, you'll see they offer a "business opportunity" as a Debt Zero rep. They charge a pretty penny for it up front, in addition to their cut of your fees. And, of course, the business owner has all the expenses associated with a business as well, such as advertising and promotion. Even Debt Zero's blue sky projections show you losing money for months as a rep. No wonder they get nasty when you don't play.

if they get nasty i would never deal with someone like that. second of all it sounds like credit relief outsources to debt zero. this is a big no no when looking for a settlement company. there is no way of knowing this scince you havent been through settlement before, but its hard enough to find out whats goin on with your accounts without having to call 4 different #s to find out who is actually handling your accounts. settlement is stressful to begin with. i would not advise you to use any company that is mean and nasty when you would question thier program. they should be happy to help you understand thier program clearly. I know in my state you have 3 business days to back out of a signed contract no questions asked. good luck to you
