NRC and the law

Ok, I got a call Monday at work from a guy who claimed to be with NRC and he stated something about a settlement and a discrepancy. I explained that I was at work and that he needed to call me or I could return his call when I was off. He said to call him but that they would be leaving by 5pm their time (Eastern). I explained that I don't even get home until after 4pm my time (Pacific) but he didn't care. He kept asking about a credit card with Household Bank and claimed I owed $1555.
When I got home that evening I called but they were all gone for the day so I left a message on his supervisor's answering machine requesting that they no longer call my work and leaving a phone number they could call me at. The next day the guy called my work again. When I told him that I had left a message with his supervisor for him to not call me at work and that I had left a good contact number, he claimed that there was no note on "my" account. I started giving him my phone number again and all of a sudden there was a second person on the phone! I was never notified that there was more than the two of us on the phone and am wondering if that is legal? The second person identified who I was AFTER I gave out the good contact number which makes me wonder if they lied about it not being noted on the account just so they could purposely harass me at work.
Other things they have done: on Friday last week I was home sick and they called...saying a bunch of things to the secretary who had answered the phone (breach of confidentiality laws?), when I requested a letter showing proof of debt they said that they didn't have to send it as I had to request it within 30 days (of what?), they stated that they told my supervisor they were faxing him a copy of the court order for garnishment of wages (my supervisor is NOT my payroll and I was never served regarding a wage garnishment hearing). They also stated that they would have my wages garnished to the tune of 19% by the end of the day.
I finally got ahold of someone last night (Wednesday) and talked with him but he got very hostile very fast and accused me of saying that they were a scam (I had made the statement to him that I did not know if they were a scam or legit... not an accusation but a mere statement to give him my perspective of the situation). This person told me to not call back and hung up on me. They never would give me a mailing address to mail a letter to them. He had said at one point that he was going to tell the company who held the "loan" that I refused to cooperate and thus give them the ok to proceed with the garnishment. Who does the actual garnishing...the collection agency or the holder of the debt?
I guess my biggest concern is that they have a court order (I am a single parent who doesn't get child support...I can no way afford a garnishment!) but as they won't send me anything and won't talk with me I have no idea what else to do. Does any one know if this company garnishes wages very often? I know I've read a lot of complaints about them on another message board (another site) but no one ever stated if they actually went through with their threat.
