Is this a collection agency who called? If so, all you need to do is tell them they have 5 days after their first initial contact to send you a dunning letter, per federal law. Read the info below, click on the link:

I don't recommend you give out ANY personal information to whoever called you. No bank information, no ss#'s, nothing. It could be anyone on the telephone posing as a debt collector attempting to rob you blind. Never confirm or deny owing a debt over the telephone, or EVER, unless you have written proof with your signature on it. Ignore these people unless they send you written proof you owe this debt, you also need proof this company has a right to collect this debt, or owns this debt.

It is however they claimed they were an attorney when they called, they never gave the name of the collection agency they were with just that they were with an attorney's office and gave the attorney's name. They initially refused to send me any information, after insisting they finally faxed me a letter. That is the only way I found out the company they were with.
