My 15 yr old son answered the door (I was at work) and the server left the summons on the doorstep. What to do? I think I owe them $1.5k from 2 yrs ago, they are asking $7.6k

I'm guessing they didn't actually hand it to your son?

It's generally legal to leave it with a person at least 13 years of age. But leaving on the doorstep, ringing the bell and leaving is probably questionable.

However, improper service will not dismiss your case and it is not a valid defense against the debt itself. Arguing that point in front of a judge will only bide you time while they "properly" serve you. Keep in mind, each time they have to go out with an alias summons and make subsequent attempts, those additional costs get tacked onto your balance.

So it will save you some time and costs to do as soaplady says and answer the summons.
