Got a letter (well more like a postcard) from Alliance One, we've never dealt with a collection agency before. We have no overdue debts or bills. They say the client is "Your Court Clients". We've never heard of them, and haven't been to court, ever. Tried to call them and got a "voicemail box is full".

Is this some kind of phishing scheme? Should we respond?

IMO you should respond with a debt validation letter. Send it through the certified mail and preserve the receipt for future references. Alliance must stop all the collection activities before responding satisfactorily to the DV letter.

What does the letter state, anyway?

The letter says that our account has been reported past due and has been placed with them for collections, etc. But doesn't say who the original creditor is other than a line that says "Client: Your Court Clients". And we've never heard of that before. We'll send the Validation letter, we've done some research and found some templates for that.

was it a postcard? Did you need to open it to see that information, or was it visible on the outside? What I am asking is, could the mailman read that before he put it in your mailbox, or would he have had to open it first? I ask because it is 100% illegal for them to send a post card because it allows third party disclosure--it allows someone other than you to see that they are trying to collect on a debt that they claim you owe. Thats a big no-no....

Don't even respond!! I have received the same thing. No explanation of who you have the debt with or anything at all, just the amount you need to pay.
It's a bunch of bull.

I just recieved one of these in the mail too. I wrote a letter contesting the debt and have never heard back from Alliance One. I tried calling and they wanted my DOB before they give me any information. I wouldn't tell them and they told me I was rude... Oh well.

I received one of these "post cards" yesterday with the same information on it. I went to the DMV and they told me they did not have a record of any camera ticket or any outstanding debt. I suspected that this was all bogus when they used a first name that I never use on any legal documents. I go by Bill but on all legal documents I use William, my legal name. I intend to write the BBB and send a copy to Aliance.

This one is a bunch of bull!
