I got one of those real looking but obviously phony checks in the mail to pay taxes on a lottery I supposedly won (yeah right). It was for $4500. I have been bugged incessantly by an obnoxious collector about an old credit card debt. As a lark, I got the collector to settle for $4500, and then I endorsed this check and sent it to them.

Now, I'm wondering if I could get in trouble for this.

I work in banking and we have had a lot of issues with those types of checks. They say you won a lottery and send you a check then all you have to do is wire the excess in "fees" that they gave to you then you get to keep the rest, but when you deposit the check and wire the money guess what, the check comes back. The problem is that those checks are considered to be fraudulent and the lottery part a scam. This type of fraud is usually handled by, no kidding, the secret service. So if you sent a fraudulent check to a collector for a credit card debt that you defaulted on, this could mean serious trouble for you, regardless if the collector is obnoxious or not.

yep.if you knowingly passed it.you could have trouble on your hands.as auburn said.just because a collector is obnoxious.doesn't mean you have to do what could amount to actual fraud.i know these collectors sometimes threaten that, but you actually did.
