Gym contract collections

If someone is collecting on a gym membership contract that I didnt pay do they have to have a copy of the original contract that I signed? What if I ask for the contract and they say they dont have it?

IMO every third party collection activity needs to follow the clauses of FDCPA, i.e. they should validate the debt before proceeding with collection.
