EME originally took loan out from but now I am getting threatening phone calls from different numbers and I see on here that EME is in the West Indies - are they legal to operate in my state in New York? I am questioning whether to send them what I owe them because they are in the West Indies - anyone dealt with these people?
Thanks - a stupid dumb blonde for sure

Not a stupid dumb blonde. We all have made a mistake or two and we are learning from each other on here. EME is illegal to operate in NYS. Here is the state information:
New York Payday Loan Laws

State Legal Status
Lending of payday loan is considered prohibited in the State of New York.

Interest rate cap on small loans
25% per annum

File your Complaint and get Information

  • Regulator - New York State Banking Department
  • Address - One State Street New York NY 10004
  • Phone - 1-877-BANK-NYS
  • Regulatory Contact - Regina A. Stone Deputy Superintendent
Read around the site a little bit more. On the first page of posts, there is information on PDLs in NYS that should be helpful. There are also letters to help you get out of this. It takes time and patience but is well worth it. ;)

Hope it helps!

Thank you for your information. I have time and I will take all the time I need to get rid of these debts - this is a nightmare for sure. Since in NYS it is illegal what is my obligation in paying them back?
Thanks - the dumb blonde Mary

Your obligation is in what you took out. That is it. However, if you had other loans with them that you paid above and beyond, your obligation is fulfilled. Look over your bank accounts. What did you pay so far for all of them compaired to what you borrowed? This may shock you but it will help you.
Who was the original company(s) and what did you borrow?
I don't have all the answers but I will try to help you as much as I can.
:)
