Original Creditor sold to Collection Agency???

I'm trying to repair my credit and have sent the original creditor a settlement letter but they sent a letter back saying that they've already sold my debt to a collections agency -- now both the OD and CA are on my credit report!!! Is that legal???

i called Lexington Law yesterday to ask how they handle charged-
i called Lexington Law yesterday to ask how they handle charged-off credit card accounts and the rep basically said that they would send out legal intervention letters -- does anyone know or have a copy of this?
