I have 3 CAs that I am trying to settle debt with but they have not responded ... what should I do?

Hi Becky,

most C/A's are on a dialer system and have "form letters" so if you are expecting a response in writing it probably won't happen. I suggest you call them and speak to them directly (if you haven't already tried that route) i know it sucks to have to call, sometimes they make you feel like a dead beat but you may get lucky and find someone with compassion. Times are tough even for C/A's they are a little more willing to negotiate, and remember, debts that are reported to your credit are easier to negotiate. Also if you don't get anywhere with the 1st collector you speak to be persistent (after all they are when they call us) move up the ladder speak to a supervisor.

Hope this helps :)

If I am not correct, debt collection companies are required to respond to verification requests within a certain amount of time.

Send a certified letter requesting verification of debt. Also in that letter let them know you have written to them on other occasions and they have not answered. How old is this debt. You there is a statute of limitations on debt.

Try it that way if they dont respond send copies to your credit reporting agency that they didnt respond to your verification request. It may be removed. Have you verified that all of this informaition is correct and complete. Sure of the statute of limitations? Also is this a debt buyer?

Lots of things to consider before sending off your hard earned money!!

The OP was not asking for verification....they were offering a settlement. Plus CA's are not "required" to respond to any DV....they just cannot continue to collect the debt if they do not respond.

Seems a little funny that you dont know the law when you appear to work as a debt Negotiator...you can't even spell it correctly.

I do know the law.

and before offering a settlement going thru verification seems like a smart idea to me.

If they cant continue to collect why would you offer a settlement?

I have my own debt settlement company. I use the law to protect my clients. If the debt is with a collector or bought I always make them verify every penny.

No I wouldnt. However the OP was not questioning debt verification...she was asking about settling. The OP has been around awhile and I would assume she had gone thru that process first. Most debtor do not request validation as they know the debt is owed, particularly when it comes to third party collections.

just to clarify, i sent out DVs to those collection agencies and they all responded and were able to verify the debt within 30 days. my dilemma now is that i have sent them 2 settlement offers but they have not responded.

what should my next step be? should i wait 30 days after the second settlement offer went out and if they haven't responded, should i start the DV process again?
