Do the collector's have the right to run your credit report w/out your authorization? I ran my own CBR today and contacted them to make pymt arrangements to take care of the debt. They insisted that in order for me to make pymts they would have to run my credit. I asked them not to and they did it as I was on the phone with them. I'm very mad about that because I don't need my score to go down any lower.

Not to mention, this thread on DebtCC.

And the case discussed in the link SC provided - the Pintos case - involved a Junk Debt Buyer, not a normal collector contracted by the original creditor. And it relates to exorbitant towing charges, not to a contractual credit obligation like a credit card or a loan.
The Pintos Court held that the FACT ACT only allows for credit reports to be obtained in connection with collection attempts when there was an underlying ???credit transaction??? under the FACT ACT. Further, the Court held that a towing debt was not part of a credit transaction.
