I just received a summons from an old credit card for almost $11,000 which there is NO WAY ican pay. What is the least amount I should try to get away with paying? Will it make a big difference if I try to get a lump sum or will payment work?

Cab, I split your post off into its own thread. You should get better exposure and more help this way.

Now, about your preoblem... What state do you live in, and when did you last make a charge or payment on the account? Have you checked with the court to verify that there is actually a case filed against you? Bogus summonses are sometimes used (illegally) as a scare tactic. Are you being sued by the original creditor (the card company) or a collection agency, and who is it?

I think you're going about it all wrong here. Gimme some answers to the above questions, and let's approach this thing logically.

Cab, Uncle is right. Fake summons can be used as a scare tactic by the collection companies. You must check it with the court clerk before arranging any payment.

Next, you must file an answer to the summon. The collector may end up getting a default judgment against you if you chose to ignore the summon.

Check with the following link. You may find it helpful.
