With the holidays and all, I stress about bad credit....I've worked very hard for a couple of years at restoring it, but my score is still around 600. It stinks cause there's nothing else I can do, I can't get rid of the collections I have on there for a couple more years. My student loan is current. And I have no credit cards, and i'm nervous about applying.

I guess i'm just wondering who's in a similar boat, shackled by a poor score. If so, what have you been able to do to help your situation at all?

Are you dealing with the collection agencies to pay off the debts? You may negotiate for 'pay for delete' when you settle with them. This would lower the number of negative entries in your report.

Also you must try cleaning up the wrong information (if any) from your report.

Yours is better than mine (585)..... You can try to apply for one of those credit cards that hold a deposit as security. That might help as long as you don't go over the limit. Keep paying your student loan on time, and work to get items deleted from your credit report as suggested. You could call them and see what it would take to get them off or modified.

Good luck.

Most of them are illegal. They charge exorbitant fees. Because the people who take them out are in dire straights and need money desperately, when it comes time to repay the full balance, they don't have the money and thus start the downhill spiral of paying high fee to renew the principal. They end up paying $600 for a $300 loan (example). The pdl companies will withdraw from your account and sometimes overwithdraw, causing your account to overdraw. They will not negotiate with you if you cannot repay them on their terms. Once you default they will be after you like the hounds of hell, calling you at home, work, calling your credit contacts, etc.

Banks' interest rates are legislated; pdls will charge up to 400%. They will bleed you dry to where you are paying their fees and not being able to pay your mortgage, utilities, etc. Read some of the threads on this website about "payday hell" and you'll see how many were affected.:(

I don't think you are going to get any recommendations here, payday loans has put a bad taste in our mouth. Depending on your situation there may be other options but more information is required from you first.
