Me and my husband have 40k unsecure dept , payments of $900 plus a month his company is going under and sidejobs are not enough to pay even the min. I can not get any of the companies to even consider reducing the payments. never had a late payment in 20 years. any suggestions

Try to speak to someone in the hierarchy. Negotiate for lower rate of interest. However, it remains the discretion of the creditor to accept a lower payment. But if the creditor disagrees then unfortunately you may have no other option but to default on the accounts if you can't continue making payments and try settlement afterward.
