Different account numbers on a collection

The thing that threw me off is that the credit card number listed in the collections notice is different from the credit card that I had. I actually have an older credit card plus I had some records from my old online banking which showed a different number.
The debt isn't in my credit report and it's a bit past the time for the DV. Should I do the DV anyway? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

What state are you in and when was the last payment made? It could be past the SOL.

When did you receive the letter? Normally you have got 30 days to send DV after receiving the dunning letter of collection.

I'm in New York. The debt was from 2003 according to the collections officer. I got the letter more than 3 months ago, they sent it to the old office address. The SOL for NY state is 6 years but I understood from my readings that the SOL is a limit for lawsuits, not collections.
@Soaplady, what they gave looks like a normal 16-digit Visa card number but what's imprinted on my actual Visa card is different. Is that what you mean by two account numbers?
Thanks!
