Paying off debt- next step? Help appreciated...
Date: Mon, 01/11/2010 - 09:11
To make a long story short- I'm an idiot. When I was 18 I used a card, stupidly thought someone else was reliable for the debt I generated to cover their ass, and now I have a lawyer-debt collector on my tail. He sued me for $3500 + interest (The card limit was 2K, I never exceeded 1000). I wasn't sent a summons or any type of paperwork to notify me I was being sued. It just so happened I searched my name to pay off a speeding ticket, and saw my name listed under a civil suit. I consider it lucky that the court date had recently occured, because had I not gotten into contact with him, he would have filed a garnishment from my wages...
Anyway, this all occured just over a year ago. I have since begun paying him bi-monthly payments. In fact, my last payment is in a week.
My question is this- What is the best move I can make at this point to help my credit score?
Obviously, a judgment against me looks horrendous and dropped my score. Is it best to file a motion to mark it as satisfied? Should I try to work with the lawyer in some way to get it removed altogether? I understand NOW that by not notifying me of a lawsuit, he broke the law. Should I sue to get it removed?
My only goal is to do whatever it takes to IMPROVE my credit score. I have a lot of goals in the next 5 years, and this places a big stop sign in front of them.
Any help is appreciated!!

Once you satisfy the judgement ask the plaintiff to report it as
Once you satisfy the judgement ask the plaintiff to report it as satisfied to the credit bureaus. You can also do the same by contacting the credit bureaus.
However, the entry would stay on your report for a longer time only the status of it can be corrected through the above ways.
