I have an item on my credit report from Zenith Acquisition over a returned check from CompUSA. As the item is only about $100, I'd like to simply pay it and be done with it. I'd also like to have it removed from my credit report.

I called Zenith and spoke to someone regarding the account, and explained that I would simply like to pay the debt and have it removed from my report (without acknowledging that the debt belonged to me). He said that the account was acquired from ARC Certigy. He also noted that I had disputed the debt through the credit bureau back in June (true) and that it came back as verified (also true).

Now, I know better than to trust a CA, so I figured I would ask here.

He said that he was unable to accept payment for a debt that was disputed and verified through the credit bureau. He also said the only way for me to handle this was to accept responsibility for the debt, pay it, and they would only be able to mark it as paid on my report. He said it was illegal for him to collect a disputed/verified debt, and they were completly unable to remove it from my report as that would also be illegal.

Any recommendations on how to proceed? I am very cautious about making any kind of agreements with a CA, especially since the account is listed as "Closed" (but unpaid) on my credit report. Would simply getting it marked as paid help my score or should I hold out for a "Pay for Delete"?

I also tried contacting CompUSA, as ideally, I'd like to take care of it through the original creditor - however they really had no idea how to locate the account for the returned check as it was an in store purchase and this was quite a few years ago. The store where the purchase was made is no longer around or in business.

Help!

I think they do not own the account anymore. You may have to contact ARC Certigy for that matter and sort it out with them.

I have never thought that its is illegal to collect a verified debt. If that is true, then anyone would get their debts verified and walk out of it.
