bank garnishment

I just found out my bank account was cleaned out by a debt collector. My husband and I were making payments after being served. Unfortunately during this time, my husband was in a serious motorcycle accident. He was stopped at a red light and hit by some uninsured girl. He then got laid off his job. You can see where this is going. We now have no money to pay our rent, pay our utility bills etc. Any suggestions? Can they take every penny and not leave us anything to live on? I've tried calling the debt collector and it's comical. They won't answer questions nor will they accept payments. Now I'm left to believe we'll be evicted, forced to move to another state to live with family and not be employed. How does this help anyone? I know we owe the money and have attempted to explain the circumstances to the collectors to no avail.
