I just checked my credit report this morning and saw a judgement entered against me in 2007 by PROMASTER Group with the original creditor listed as Providian. I do not recall ever having an account with Providian, so I looked online to find a phone number to call there and see what this was all about.

I found that Providian is now Chase/Washington Mutual, and called their customer service department. The person was very helpful and searched their records (past, present, in collections, paid in full - everything) using my name, social security number, and even every zip code I've lived under, and then told me that they have no record of my ever having an account with them.

I contacted my county clerk's office and the clerk told me that the judgement is in fact real and was entered in 2007.

When I explained that this was the first I've heard of it, they said that record shows papers were served to me in 2007 - the address they gave me was one that I had not lived at since 2001 (I have income, property, and county tax receipts verifying my new residence from 2001 to present that can prove this).

The clerk told me that the combination of the fact that I was never served properly, and that the original creditor says that they have no record of my debt, should make it easy for me to get this false judgement removed from my record. However I have no idea how to do this.

They suggested I find a way to get the case brought before the county Supreme Court Judge, but it seems to me that if the original creditor doesn't even say I owe anything, and in fact doesn't know who I am and doesn't even WANT my money, that this judgement should be thrown out without my even having to find out what steps to take to go to Supreme Court!

Any advice or comments would be very welcome, as we are infuriated and depressed over this. We were just denied a home equity loan on a house that we own outright, free and clear, and had no idea why until we found this on my credit report.

Thank you!

Well, since the judgement is real you need to combat it legally. Unfortunately it is not going to drop off your report just like that. In most states judgement can stay on the report for a very long time and can also be renewed till not satisfied. Hence, it would continue damaging your score for a long time. IMO you need to speak to a lawyer and take necessary steps to get it removed altogether.
