AMEX--GC Services--what to do now?
Date: Tue, 01/19/2010 - 09:22
A month ago, this collector who I later found out was from GC Services called me wanting to talk to me about my AMEX account. It was about 90 days past due, and I wasn't ready to talk to them yet, plus I was getting my monthly statement from AMEX, so I was kind of suspicious. Anyway I called AMEX, and got a recording stating they no longer service my account. I ended up sending a debt validation letter to GC Services after I got a collection letter asking me to pay, but I also got a monthly statement from AMEX at the same time.
Then the next day I got a letter from AMEX stating they had gotten GC Services to handle my account (oops). Since I sent the debt validation letter 2 wks ago, I have not heard or gotten anything from GC Services or AMEX. I really want to talk to them, but I don't want to compromise my situation since I sent that debt validation letter. Any suggestions?
On a side note, I'm really glad I found this site--it's an invaluable source of info and much needed reassurance--just this matter w/ AMEX and GC has me stressing big time.

You have sent the letter before receiving the confirmation from
You have sent the letter before receiving the confirmation from Amex. I see no wrong in that. There is no time limit for the collection agency to reply to the mail. So, they can take their time to validate it. At least you can wait for 30 days before picking up the thread again.
Worst that can happen is that GC Service may sue you over it. Even in that case you would have the option to settle outside the court and get them drop the case.
