If you are really serious about negotiating a settlement and have the funds to do so, credit card companies usually won't begin negotiating until you are past due on your account. I don't know that it's such a good idea to only let one go and not the others though, but I am going to let someone else with more experience and knowledge about this subject reply to this, so please keep checking back for more replies.

Eventually you have to stop paying on all to settle. I stopped on 9 but did keep 1 active to help restore credit after settlement. However, many people in this forum staggered non-payment. Staggering helps you to accumulate funds for settlement. I wish I would have staggered mine some.

hey ras, i was in debt for $33,900 and i went to see a group in nyc that works in all states. they helped me with my monthly payments and my total debt was reduced to $14,000 before i started to pay it off.. so not only did they help me with payments they helped me with my total debt unlike some debt consolidations that only help with. email me deleted...pm if you would like to get more info on the group.

I understand how you feel. I do all the paying of bills in our house and everytime I have to sit down and balance the checkbook I get scared. What is more frustrating is that I try to show my husband how bad things are and he doesn't seem to get it.
He earns good money but our debt is big! When he took his current job 2 years ago it was with a written agreement of a base salary (which we could live off) and a yearly bonus which we agreed to use to pay off big chunks of debt. Based on the 10yrs previous bonus payout history, he took the new job. Wala! 6months after he took the job w/ the written pay structure, the company changed its cash bonus policy to a 401k profit sharing bonus.
Completley shattered me. Now, yes there is money in a 401k but no money to pay down debt! And of course, we can't touch it until hubby is vested.
So, I keep looking at this pissing away at monthly minimums and we can't get anyway ahead. Tried looking for a job to meet these obligations for over a year. Ready to go work nights at a gas station to to ease our situation and frustrated that my husband doesn't understand my fears.

Thanks moderator. I have experienced no need whatsoever to hire and pay anyone to settle for me. The creditors have been very decent (and I am dealing wit 11) and clearly this is a "diy" situation if there ever was one. Several of my cards will not even work with settlement firms. Raz, you only have two choices....keep paying or stop, wait out 3-4 months and settle for a fraction of the debt. Understand your credit will be trashed. But, FHA gives mortgages in the low 500's so it is not the end of the world.
