Know how to deal with a Collection Agency
Hello,
There are a number of things to keep in mind in dealing with a collection agency (CA). This forum is full of information both in prior threads and in some of the articles. Read as much as you can in dealing with collection agencies before you send off your money. For instance, you want to verify that they actually are entitled to collect on this debt, so you want to send them a verification letter.
If they are the legitimate CA for this account, you should attempt to negotiate on the amount to settle the account. For instance, if you owe $500, offer them $200. If they accept a lower offer, send no money until you receive a letter from them documenting the amount you are settling the account for and that once paid, the account is considered paid in full.
How old is the loan and has it gone past the statute of limitations in your state? You might not have to pay it back at all.
These are just a few things to bare in mind when dealing with a CA.
Good Luck

Never admit to owing a debt on the phone, nor should you attempt making payment arrangements, until you KNOW for certain this is a legit debt. Tell them you need a letter of collection via the mail as required by the FDCPA within 5 days after their first initial contact with you.
