In the past, I have found one or two things that did not belong to me on my credit reports and disputed them with no problem. However, this weekend my mouth almost dropped when I did my free annual credit reports. I filed BK last year and wanted to make sure everything is reporting like it should-HA!

Both Equifax and TransUnion were off with minor things, but Experian...WOW! I had numerous Bankruptcies on there in different cities, accounts that were not mine, collections/charge-offs--things that the other 2 did not show. So I started the online dispute, but after doing 4, I realized I needed to look a little harder before I go any further. Well, glad I did.

There were TONS of recent inquiries and at the end when they showed name variations and address variations--mine were there with at least 4 other women with my first name/different last names. There were loads of addresses in other states that I have never been and even birth dates and variations of last 4 digits of social security numbers.

So I stopped disputing because it was obvious there is some sort of problem. Then I got worried. I am not thinking identity theft because the other 2 CRA's did not show any of this. Besides, most of this debt showing would have came up when I filed BK less than 1 year ago. What I worried about was starting a dispute on these items and then these creditors/collection agencies that these women owe start hounding me. Gosh, I just got rid of all the collections and creditor calls.

Naturally, Experian is only open Mon-Fri and I have been so bothered by this all weekend. Luckily I am not in need of using my credit anytime soon, but imagine if I did. If I was sitting at a car dealership or trying to rent an apartment and they pulled that HUGE credit report with garbage on it--I would have been denied. Yeah, I bet they hear it all the time "that's not mine". I am just so worried that creditors are going to start hassling me because I initiated a dispute for these items that really aren't mine. Technically, these negatives are someones and are probably legit. I just do not want to deal with theirs. I literally just got over the worse financial storm of my life that lasted years..I don't want to re-live it again--especially for things that aren't mine!

Not only does it bother me that this could happen--the same way I got the personal information on these women--someone could be reading mine right now. Sure, I have a very common name that I use a variation of BUT shouldn't my credit info show up only under my social security # only regardless of what my name is? That is a bad thing-very bad. Also, these credit reporting agencies should NOT only have Mon-Fri assistance for this kind of stuff. To me, this is a problem. At least Experian only has those hours--not sure about the others. Sure, you can get a 24/7 automated fraud line where you can talk to a machine and get absolutely nowhere.

I can not wait until Experian opens tomorrow, although I don't know if this is common or if I will even get anywhere with this. Anyone ever have a mixed credit file? How did you deal with it?

Thanks SC! ;)

Well, I spoke with Experian by phone and they do see there is some kind of mix up. I was told by the friendly rep that "that department" will go through my report and correct whatever needs to be corrected. They will then send me an updated credit report. Now it is just a waiting game.

Well, I am happy to report that Experian sent me an updated credit report???so far so good. They cleared pretty much everything off of there that was not mine except a few minor things like the other girl's phone #and employer info. Naturally, the few things I initiated a dispute for are currently "pending". If I would have known my Experian file was mixed with someone else's at the time, I would have never started a dispute on anything. It would have just been removed like everything else. I am hoping it is...and soon.

I will update here once there are any changes.

OK, good update...the things that I disputed and that were pending have been removed by Experian. YAY! :)

Now I will start the task of removing the little things like the other girl's phone # and employer info--also a few minor things of mine that are not reporting correctly. But all the other stuff is gone and I am happy.

You know, they send you an updated credit report with the changes that have been made, but they don't give you your updated score. Bummer. I personally think I should get a free score out of this.

What I am going to do is update everything???even the minor stuff???with all 3 credit bureaus and get my updated scores when they are all cleared up. I am very curious to know though how my score was affected by all of this.

I agree, but that score is gold to them. So many people know that if they want a free report all they need to do is start a dispute. People can get a free report every month just by disputing anything on their reports. But with the scores, that is their golden goose. You can't get those unless you or a creditor pays for it.

You are right about that one. I have decided to wait a couple more months and give everything time to update before I spend any more money. As much as I want to know what my new credit score is, I will wait it out and save the $$$ until I actually really need to know what it is. For example: When it is time to move to a new place and a credit report needs to be pulled.
