This has remained as a subject of debate for over a period of time whether or not it's justified to check the credit score before giving an auto policy but more and more insurers are checking into that.
Anyway, the insurer would look into your credit report to check your loan repayment history, pattern and amount of outstanding debt. It is believed that people with poor credit are tend to file more insurance claims than ones with better scores.

do all companies do this? I left my current company for two years back in 2004 because of points on my license. i came back to it in 2007 (after my bankruptcy) and they gave me an excellent rate.. i pay far lower for complete full coverage than many i know.
