Hmmm...sorry if my somewhat cryptic message left you with the impression I meant something concocted or dishonest- maybe "story" is the wrong term. Beyond "I can't pay or pay right away", is there anything in conversation that I would be sorry I mentioned- or didn't mention... ie. possible sources of money down the line, past incomes, outlook of future incomes... How much detail should be included- especially if I'm going to have to repeat this over and over again.

As Paul said "be honest". If you truly have a financial hardship let them know. I have heard if you say you are going to borrow money from family and friends they may try to get more out of you.
Otherwise, there is not much you can say that will hurt you.

actually i meant it as alot of people either try to rehearse or are nervous about explaining their situation,and comes off as unatural.be sincere,be honest,and above all know that you are hardly the only one they talk to.sometimes that initial call is the hardest to make.been there done that.
