Amex letter

I'm trying to settle a 22K debt with amex @ 25%. They are requring a letter of Hardship before they can settle with me. Is this normal? Do I have to write this letter?

You of course do not have to do it. But they have not been settling very easily for a lot of folks. I got 35% over 6 months for $12-$14k total debt. But, my cr looks ugly. First thing they said to me is: "you paid boa down 14 months ago"! they know alot about you.
Personally, a letter of "anything" can be put in your face as a fraud charge if you lie, so I never like that option. Especially Amex....they keep your file forever.

just a policy i suppose, may i ask why would you not want to write a hardship letter if that is needed by policy after all i imagine they are writting off a lot of your debt. just be honest in your letter letting them know your harship
