I am experiencing extreme financial difficulty related to a medical condition. I need to settle my Heloc (which is under water), my chase CC ($12K) and a Pottery Barn cc ($4700).

The problem is I have a finite amt of $$ to settle all of these. The heloc will take all my money if I let them. They are unsecured in California. The pottery barn card is on an interest free period until the summer so they don't even know anything is wrong. For the Chase card I am current at this moment but will not be able to pay on March 11.

What is the correct strategy for this? I tried contacting my heloc ahead of being deliquent and tried to get them to work with me but they obviously put my request in the circular file. I have enough money on hand to settle each account for 30%. I am trying to avoid BK and collection agencies.

I had an 800 credit score until Sept last year when I had to pony up almost $100K to pay for 2 uninsured surgeries.

no not behind yet. March 11 is my chase payment date and my Pottery Barn card first due date is July I think.
I feel totally destroyed after my illness and having to pay for things I never in a million years thought I would have to pay for since I have, you know, <>, what a load of BS the healthcare in this country is, like a total racket.

Anyway I am not late but figure they will come to me after a few mos but I really would like to be proactive, I have the money I have now to pay, there will be no more forthcoming later so I would really like to get this behind me.

The problem with the Pottery Barn card is I don't even know who to write. It is a credit card issued by World Wide Financial bank, they underwrite many credit cards for stores I believe. Those can be total loan sharks. But they won't know I am late because I dont' have to pay until July. if the PB people pull a credit report before that time they will know though, I hope they do.

For your credit card late 5 mos did you offer to settle? For how much

I had received no offers what so ever so I wrote and offer 20% @ 4 mo. but so far no counter offers.
They wrote back and said they would like to speak to me in person.
Really hate to call since I still feel so unwell.

Anyway someone told me since my fico score was around 800 before, it has taken months for it to drop low enough for offers to start coming in. If this true I don't know.
Hoping this week to receive a offer since I'm 5 months late today.

Personally, I believe letters are not going to get anything done. Just pretend you are buying a used car and call them up, or take the call when they call you.
