I've fallen into debt with overdrafts from Wachovia right at the same time as my grandfather's passing and losing my job. Things started to tumble with the snowball effect and its gotten worse. Now I am trying to pay off all my debts one by one smallest to largest. I haven't really been harassed by RJM but at the same time my phone was turned off and now I have a new number. After talking with Wachovia Deposit Recovery they said they purged their records and the debt was transferred to RJM. I was transferred to their number. They said I owe 326.89 but the settle amount is 228.82. And I can either pay by phone or mail in the payment. They said they'd mail and e-mail me a receipt after payment was received. I told them that I'd be calling back once I transferred my funds to be able to pay by phone and I was given a case number to give when I call back. Seems relatively simple but before I pay I wanted to know what could I do about RJM being on my credit report. I want to be able to do as much repair to my credit as possible.

Thanks for any help.

Jrandall, are you confident about the amount that RJM is claiming that you owe?

We normally advice people to send a debt validation letter to the collection agency before agreeing to settle an account since collection agencies are often known to falsify a claim over a debt. But, anyway, if you are sure about the debt, you might settle with RJM without losing further time. However, I'd suggest that you don't authorise a payment over the phone, rather, send it through moneygram. Also, make sure that they send you a signed letter stating that you have satisfied the debt.

Regarding removing the CA from your report, you can negotiate a pay for delete with them.
