Who owns a debt

I have a debt on my credit report that says purchased by another lender. I have never received any letters or calls about this. It has been there for several months. HSBC does not want to give any information. Is there any way to find out who this was sold to. I am getting ready to prepare a bk petition, and I need to have a creditor to put on it.

In my case I called the original creditor to ask who was in char
In my case I called the original creditor to ask who was in charge of the debt, I also asked if the debt was sold or assigned.
