AMERICAN EXPRESS LEGAL....has anyone ever dealt ...

It is probably their in house attorneys.

What would suggest my next step with them is? Its been 90 days. Do I ask for a settlement now. Or do I ask for arbitration. maggie has given me some good advice, but I want as much as possible. I might have money to settle with them in a month. Also do their legal dept bug me first and threaten before they send out to a NCO type place or does amEx sue me through this legal place.

FYI - I called amex and they said my account was closed and they sent it to American Express Legal ....as if it was another company, not a different department.

2 things i believe./// the first is that if they believe you have the resources to pay, they just might try to get you to pay. and second, if they believe your are broke and send yours to nco, they will settle at 90 days. good luck.

Unless someone else says I am wrong here is how I see their process. They will keep in house for 180 days (American Express Legal). After that they will send to NCO, James West, Zwicker. They do not sell debt but use these companies to collect. Mine went past 180 days and has since gone from National Recovery to James West to NCO.

I think the dude is just trying to scare you. I do not think they will do anything rash until at least 180 days late.

I was on a hardship with monthly payments of $60 for 12 months. Because I paid the full balance due they cacelled my card and reported to the credit company's which lowered my exelent credit score down to good.

I owe over 15K and american express legal refuses to settle for less then two thirds and served me with a lawsuit which is pending. They dont always dump it on NCO. it probably depends on where you live and the amount of your debt.

I owe them about the same. Where do you live and when did they serve you. What day? 90 ? 120 ?

Wow.... NCO usually handles Amex accounts after they are charged off. I got them to settle at 15% and 19% on two different account that were over $15K each. Keep calling them and ask to talk to someone different... If they served you with a summons you must show up!

anyone have any idea what usually happens and how involved the judge gets?

I have offered to settle for 35% but they claim they wont go for less that 60%

went down to court today and amex filed to push off the case a few months. the judge put down that they have to send me all documents related to the case within 45 days.

I would call DS Financial at 866-833-6398 they can get it settled at less than 20 cents on the dollar.
